Best Practices to Make the Most of Your Giving Tuesday Campaign

Written by Tony Connor, Director of Marketing, Public Interest Registry

Are you ready? #GivingTuesday is quickly approaching on November 28 this year. With a little over a month to prepare, it’s recommended to begin outreach around your campaign on October 28, one month before the actual date. As a campaign centered around social media, one of the best ways for nonprofits to amplify their #GivingTuesday efforts is to ramp up social media and email efforts in preparation for and during the global campaign.

A few weeks ago, Public Interest Registry and Nonprofit Tech for Good partnered together with Giving Tuesday to share the best practices in preparing a social media campaign for #GivingTuesday. We’ve included a summary below of the five key takeaways covered in the webinar, and the full notes from the  webinar can be accessed here

  • Best Practice #1: Start Promotion by October 28th
    • It’s important to start a #GivingTuesday campaign well in advance. By doing so, NGOs and nonprofits can connect with their audience and begin to generate excitement and buzz around the campaign. Think of it as a save the date.
  • Best Practice #2: Design Visual Content
    • Integrating visual graphics to social media content can increase audience interaction. Some examples of visual content include countdown graphics, call-to-give graphics, powerful stats and inspirational quotes.
  • Best Practice #3: Launch Ambassador Program
    • Introducing an ambassador program increases the number of people taking about your organization, especially by empowering allowing “ambassadors” to share information to their social networks.
  • Best Practice #4: Activate Your Networks
    • Using all social media channels to share updates on the day – November 28 – of the event can increase your reach and voice to promote #GivingTuesday.
  • Best Practice #5: Report Success
    • This best practice is very important to drive momentum into the following year. Through publicly reporting your successes to your donors, it gives the opportunity to show what can be accomplished via their support in a short 24-hour window.
